Chinese New Year is coming soon! I guess many of our Chinese friends are already on holiday because this is the time of the year where you can reunite and celebrate with your family and relatives!
In Malaysia, we celebrate the Chinese New Year in many ways. Today, let’s talk about some of the celebrations and phenomena that only occur in Malaysia!

#1 Yee Sang

While many of us thought that Yee Sang is a traditional practice in celebrating Chinese New Year, it is actually a cultural activity that only for Chinese living in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. In other Chinese-populated countries such as Hong Kong and Taiwan, the practice of Yee Sang is almost unheard of.
Anyhow, Yee Sang is a yummy and auspicious dish!

#2 Endless Chinese New Year Songs

Every year after Christmas, we start to listen to Chinese New Year songs wherever we go. Malaysia is the only country that so much in love with Chinese New Year songs. We can see artists cover well-known tracks, remake music videos and release new CNY songs for every new coming year.
It is almost customary to expect a new song, sometimes even a new album, from major TV and broadcasting companies, and normally comes along with a variety of merchandises, especially a mascot plush-toy.

#3 Heart-Warming Commercial Ads

One of the specialities of Malaysia in celebrating not just CNY, but almost every festive celebration, is the heart-warming and tear-jerking commercials. The trend was brought up by late Yasmin Ahmad’s productions for Petronas and has then adopted by major brands in Malaysia, becoming customary for more than a decade.
The commercials that released during festive celebrations has turned into a medium to share messages of virtue, appreciation, respect and love. They are more than just sending a product message.
