“Are you open to any new opportunity at the moment?”

If someone asks you this question during year end, your answer will most probably be a ‘no’.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re satisfied with your current job or not, what matters to you is your annual bonus.

We work hard for the whole year and expect company to reward us with annual bonus.
You feel that all your hard work paid back when you have gotten your annual bonus.
Am I right?

Yet beware, because Annual Bonus is designed to make you feel that ‘They appreciate me!’ and hence become loyal to the company.
After you’ve gotten your bonus and maybe an increment, you are motivated to continue to contribute all of you to your employer again.
In the middle of the year, you start to think that you should pursue your career advancement but your company couldn’t offer you promotion and you’re too busy to conduct a job search.
One day, someone called you and asked you whether you’re looking for a new role, it’s a good opportunity but you hesitated. Why?
Because it’s nearly year end again!
Today, what I’m trying to tell you is don’t let ‘Annual Bonus’ to stop you from pursuing your career advancement. I am not suggesting that you should let go of your annual bonus or asking you to change job frequently. I’m here to give you an alert, don’t be carried away by the annual bonus!

When someone offered you a new opportunity, these are things that you should consider first:

  1. Are you ready for new challenges?
  2. Are you interested to the hiring company?

We have to keep upgrading ourselves by learning new knowledge and skills or else we will be eliminated by the fast-changing world. Therefore, you should always seek for new challenges. It’s either a new project, a higher-level position, or a new environment. These are things that could enrich your portfolio.

If you can get promotion or you are handling challenging tasks in your current company, then you’re cool. If not, you’d probably need to find a new role somewhere else.

When a recruiter approached you, you should study about the company first before you take or make any decision. Google about the company’s news, check out what is their current and upcoming projects. If the company is growing aggressively, you will have a lot of chances to involve in new challenges.

You shouldn’t let annual bonus stop yourself from a better opportunity. You can reject the opportunity if you are still happy with your current environment or you’re not interested in the given opportunity.  Don’t let yourself become a penny wise, pound foolish person!

Wish you all the best in your career!
